The will of Thomas Pettus dated 14 January 1779 names slaves given to his various children: to son John Pettus he gave one negro woman named Fanny and her children, one negro man named Sam, one negro man Glasgo, one negro woman named Judy. To his son Samuel Overton Pettus he gave one negro woman named Judich and her children, one negro man named Windsore and one negro man named Jimmy. To his son David Walker Pettus he gave one negro woman named Rose, one negro boy named Sampsom and one negro boy named Warwick. and he lent him one negro woman named Phillis and her two children Massilve and Lydia. To his daughter Mary Brown he gave one negro woman named Mercy, one negro man named Squire and one girl Sarah and one child Daniel belonging to Mercy. To his daughter Anne Shelbburne he gave one negro woman Rachael and her children, and one named Ned .
