The will of Thomas Butler dated 6 January 1784 specifies which slaves are given to members of his family, i.e., to my son-in-law Benjamin Goodrich and his wife Lucy one negro fellow named Frank; to my son-in-law Evans Mabry and his wife Elizabeth one negro fellow called Sammy; to my son-in-law Lewis Lanier and his wife Anne one negro woman called Cressie, one negro girl called Fanny, one negro girl called Lucy, one negro girl called Grace and one negro boy called Dick; to my son Thomas Butler one negro fellow called Sam, one negro woman called Janney and one negro girl called Lulley; to my beloved wife the following negroes: Grace, Abraham, Judy, Kate, Patience, Cary, Ohana, King, Dicey, Anica, Louise, Willis, Silvia and Daffy.. He then specified that when his son Vines Butler reached the age of 21, the negroes be equally divided among Vines, the widow and the youngest daughter Sally Walter Butler.
