- In about 1737, Peter Villepontoux entered into a mortgage agreement with Daniel Greene having a due date of August 8, 1738, in which several slaves served as collateral, according to my understanding. The slaves mentioned by name are Scipio, Will, Toby, Tony, Cyrus, Little Tony, and Nanny, each of whom is also included in the further mortgage document mentioned below. On February 8, 1738, Peter Villepontoux entered into a further mortgage agreement with Ebeneazer Simmons, Isaac Marzyk(?) and John Allen in which 19 slaves served as collateral, according to my understanding of the document (which has a due date of January 30, 1739). The slaves named are: Tony (Man), Scipio (Man), Will (Man), Toby (Man) Primus (Man), Flander(?)(Man), Dick (Man), Cyrus (Man Boy), Prince (Boy), Mingo (Boy), Little Tony (Boy), Flora (Woman), Kate (Woman), Molly (Woman), Belinda (Woman), Luna (Girl), Sabina (Girl), Phillis (Girl), and Nanny (Girl). A third slave mortgage document dated March 13, 1739 involving Peter Villepontoux mentions the following slaves by name (all described as Negro men): Sambo, Cuffee(?) and Roan Oke(?). The Low Country Digital Library has a 1799 estate document of Peter Villepontoux that lists a number of EPs (this is a different, but related, Peter Villepontoux than the individual described above).
