Thomas Kershaw was born 1804/8 in Charleston, South Carolina. He came to Washington County in the early to mid 1830s. He died in 1885. Kershaw had a large plantation in southern Washington County. The plantation was situated on the Mississippi River, just below and adjoining the town of Princeton. Thus far, I have found three sources listing names of EP. The first is the deed by which Kershaw obtained the plantation in 1836. Second, is a deed from 1839 whereby he placed a number of EPs as security for payment of a debt. Lastly, the pension records for Reuben Fox reveal EP Buck Anderson, who was enslaved on the Kershaw place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1: Acquisition of Plantation Washington County, Mississippi Deed Book E Page 514 By indenture dated 16 June 1836, THOMAS KERSHAW and JAMES H. The plantation was described as being Lots 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Section 10, and Lots 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Section 9, all in Township 14 Range 9W. Along with the land, Kershaw and Claiborne acquired furniture, farm utensils, cattle, horses, mules, sheep, and oxen. They also acquired Haring’s 32 EP who lived on the plantation. Kershaw and Claiborne paid $95,000 for the land, animals, furniture, and EPs. The EPs were, in the order listed in the deed: 1. JOE 2. AGGY 3. MAJOR 4. POLLY 5. NANCY 6. MARY 7. JIM 8. JAMES 9. The note was made in favor of Matthew Flournoy, and was payable at the Commercial bank of New Orleans.
