Stories and details of Freedmen are mentioned in the autobiography (pages 4-12) of William Penn Hunnicutt (Quaker) who went to Mississippi during Civil War to teach freedmen how to read and write. He also includes other interesting stories about freedmen on Island 63 and a skirmish fought by freedmen.
