- Margaret Smart-Cox born in 1848 from N.Carolina was brought to Alabama prior to Civil War. Black husband John Quincy Cox does not appear on the 1870 census they were married in Jan 1870. They had 6 children together. Oral history says Quincy was run off by the son of Emanuel Cox sometime after 1876, was said to have gone to Texas or been killed. Margaret went on to have 5 children with Charles M Cox son of Emanuel. Looking for info for Margaret and where she came from in N.C. Oral history says she along with her brother Robert Smart were walked to Alabama by a slave trader and sold.
