In the spring of 1840 while traveling from Wilmington, Delaware to Springville, Wisconsin, Stephen purchased Floyd Signor, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Earle) Signor, and their baby boy with the sole intention of freeing them in Wisconsin, which he did. The Signor family later moved to Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Signor were born in New York.
