- The targeted SH I'm researching is Nathan Greene Rand (and his son Walter R. Rand) of Wake County, North Carolina. The Rand SH family expanded into Alabama (and later Texas) during the 1830s. My direct 2nd great grandfather (Clement aka Clem) & extended kin (also originally from North Carolina) were enslaved on the Rand plantations in Dallas, Wilcox, and Clark Counties in Alabama under the auspices of Walter R. Rand. I suspect (hypothesize) that Clem was biologically related to an Archie, Calhoun, Joshua, and Merritt, all five assumed the surname RAND. The 1870 & 1880 censuses show them living in close proximity and were listed similarly in 1864 on Walter R. Rand's estate appraisement/inventory. On the one hand, I'm currently co-administrator of a Y-DNA project via FTDNA called the "The Five Rand Brothers." The goal is to identify and to Y-DNA test their living male descendants to confirm (or not) the proposed relationship. On the other hand, because of the complexity of surname patterns of African Americans after enslavement, I'm also reaching out to (1) other males who had a direct paternal ancestor enslaved on the Rand Family plantations located in Alabama, North Carolina, and Texas regardless of surname (Y-DNA test); and (2) to anyone who had enslaved ancestors on said Rand plantations regardless of gender (autosomal test). Strategic DNA testing in conjunction with documentary evidence could help to accelerate solving this huge puzzle of dispersed families as a result of America’s “peculiar institution.” One without the other, however, would be nothing short of a futile search in my humble opinion.
