Researching the Peele family of Bertie County, NC, descended from Lawrence Peelle (1601, England, arrived Virginia 1621) through Robert Peelle, Joshua Peele, Josiah Peele (1752-1843), and Dempsey Peele Sr. (1775-1838). Records identified to date that name enslaved individuals: Bill of sale, 6 November 1809, Bertie Co, NC. Henry King transferred Bridget, Lydia, and Abraham to Dempsey Peele Sr. for 190 pounds. Recorded Bertie Co Register of Deeds Book V, p. 183. Records pending review that likely name additional enslaved individuals: Josiah Peele's 1841 will (probated 1843, Bertie Co), William H. Peele's 1829 estate (Bertie Co), Dempsey Peele Sr.'s 1838 estate (Bertie Co), and the 1830 Bertie County census showing 10 enslaved people in Dempsey Sr.'s household. Connected slaveholding families in this research include Wiggins (Gates Co, NC), Brinkley (Gates Co, NC), and Higgs (Bertie Co, NC), to be submitted separately as records are processed.
