- At the time of John Braly’s (b1720) death (21 Apr 1797) owned at least 6 (1790 census) enslaved people (EPs). Named and bequeathed in his will are: 1. Ben (Bea) (negro boy to daughter Anne Braly Aston d 1798) possibly Ben Williams. a. On July 12, 1842, William Bigham (husband of Sarah Braly) made his nuncupative will. He bequeathed to his beloved wife his slave Benjamin, commonly called "Big Ben", Celia, the wife of Ben, and their children. He died on July 24, 1842. b. Ben is later mentioned in the will of Sarah Braly Bigham d 2 Nov 1846. In her will, Sarah Braly bequeaths them to her son Hugh and entreats Hugh not to separate Ben and his family, Joe, Rufus, Samuel, Lilah, and Anderson. c. In the 1830 census, Sarah’s son Hugh Braly Bigham (b1798 in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina d1862) had three slaves living with him. Slaves - Males - Under 10 (1) Slaves - Females - Under 10 (1) Slaves - Females - 10 thru 23 (1). Died in 1862 Arkansas, Arkansas, United States. i. 1840 census not found/verified yet. ii. In an 1850 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules he has one female age 25. iii. 1860 census not found/verified yet. d. Ben is later with Sara Braly Bigham’s grandson David Bigham (b circa 1828 in Marshall Co. or Bedford Co., Tennessee to Hugh Braly Bigham and Elizabeth Jane Ramsey. Died about 1891). e. In the 1880 census the David Bigham family is listed as having a 13-year-old African-American boy named “Ruph Williams” living with them. [This is likely a descendent of Ben, or Rufus, the son of “Negro Ben” that Sarah Braly Bigham (David’s grandmother) left to David’s father Hugh in her 1846 will. (Not verified) 2. Doll (negro woman to wife Sarah Carruth Braly d 1800) possibly Doll Callies or Callus a. At the time of Sarah Carruth Braly’s (b1732) death (12 DEC 1800), she named Doll in her will to be sold at Public Vendue and value divided among Sarah’s children OR it is Sarah’s wish to give Doll the liberty of which of Sarah’s children she would choose to live with and if able to purchase her. Doll should be able to live where she lives now until the Public Vendue. Doll Callies Callus (negro woman / wench to wife Sarah Carruth Braly d 1800). 3. Jesse (negro boy to daughter Sarah Braly Bigham d 1846) 4. London (negro boy to daughter Margaret Braly Jameson d 1810 ) 5. Lucey (negro woman to daughter [Nancy?] Agnes Braly Downall d 1816) 6. Syrus (negro boy to daughter Mary Jane Brawley Braly Oates d 1827 ). a. Syrus may be found later in the home of John Oates but John Oates slaves appear to be younger than Syrus would have been. i. In the 1820 Census John Oates has 5 slaves. Slaves - Males - Under 14: (2) Slaves - Females - 14 thru 25: (2) Slaves - Females - 26 thru 44: (1) ii. In the 1830 Census John Oates has 5 slaves. Slaves - Males - 10 thru 23: (2) Slaves - Females - 24 thru 35: (2) Slaves - Females - 55 thru 99: (1) iii. John Oates will of 1849 mentions several EPs but not Syrus. This needs further review. (Other EPs bequeathed: woman Reiney (?), man Frank, boy Allen, small girl Harriet Jane, small girl Araminta) 7. Other “residual” negroes possible but not mentioned by name to be sold at Public Vendue.
