Junius lived in Scott County, Kentucky, and Washington County, Mississippi. He had a number of enslaved at both locations. The names listed here are from Kentucky. Junius, in a 1862 trust document, named the following slaves, located in Kentucky: 1. LOUISA: aged about 40 years 2. CAROLINE: aged about 55 years 3. GEORGE: aged about 18 years 4. LEWIS: aged about 45 years 5. JERRY: aged about 30 years 6. DICK: aged about 60 years 7. BEN: aged about 50 years 8. LUCY, aged about 30 years 9. TOM: aged about 45 years 10: ISAAC: aged about 45 years This trust document is recorded in the Scott County, Kentucky, Mortgage Book 3, at pages 86-88. Document dated 28 October 1862. ~~~~~~~~~~ In her recollections of the war, Mary Breckinridge, noted that in the kitchen of her great Uncle Ward's house reigned "AUNT LINDY," who made great biscuits; was of high temper and a free tongue; and chased people out of kitchen with dish rag (Mary was the daughter of General John C. Breckinridge. During the war, she and several of her siblings resided at the George W. Johnson home in Scott County, Kentucky. The Johnson property was near/adjacent to Junius Ward's property. The house to which Mary referred is Junius Ward's house outside of Georgetown, in Scott Co, Ky). Mary's "Recollections of Civil War Times in Kentucky" is found in The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Volume 45 No. 152; July 1947; Pages 225-234 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following names are gleaned from Dr. Paul Rankin's bill to Junius: ISAAC, TOM, LUCY. On January 6, 1864, Dr. Paul Rankins visited and tended to "ISAAC." Dr. Rankin billed Junius $2 for the visit. On January 7, 1864, Dr. Rankins visited and tended to "TOM." He billed Junius $1 for the visit. On April 11, 1864, Dr. Rankins visited "LUCY" three times. He then visited her 19 times between April 11 and May 10. On May 11, Dr. Rankins visited Lucy for "night visit and delivery." He then made 5 additional visits between May 11 and May 21. There is nothing expressly stating that these three are the same folks as listed in the 1862 trust document. Given the same location in Scott County, and the relatively short time period between the two documents, I think it is reasonable to presume they are the same folks. But ... that would just be a presumption. Dr. Rankins' bill is part of the massive file for a lawsuit against Junius Ward, which lasted over five years. Dr. Rankins' bill is not on line. Contact me for further information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Over the years, starting in 1829, Junius is listed on the Scott County, Kentucky, tax rolls as being taxed for a number of slaves, anywhere from 3 to 19.
