Comments
Information about the people he enslaved comes from the 1830 census, 1840 census, 1850 slave census, and 1860 slave census. Hackney was elected to represent Chatham County in North Carolina's General Assembly in the 1840s and 1850s. He was a pro-slavery Unionist who defended states' rights to protect "property" rights (i.e., the right to enslave human beings). Those opinions are plainly stated in print in newspapers. After the secession of North Carolina, he served as a Confederate officer in the Home Guard for Chatham County.
