Metcalf enslaved farm workers in Forest from 1817 until Emancipation and rented their labor out. Names include Pauline (or Polly), married surname Griffin, and at least some of her children. In the Bedford County register of Slave Births, 1853-1865, he reports 14 births to 10 women in that period, including one to Polly: Alice, 9/12/1857, to mother Martha; and Thornton, to Martha on 1/21/1855. Nancy, 10/23, 1857, to mother Lucy Mary, 11/13/1857, to mother Betsey a girl born to Ginny, 1856; and Matilda, also to Ginny, 2/19/1857 John, born to Dolley, 1/1/1853 Manerva, 1/15/1857, to mother Netty a female born to Caroline, 1856 Stephen, born to mother Easter**, 5/6/1855 Laura, born to mother Mary, 5/11/1853 ** Metcalf apparently fathered children with the enslaved Easter, including his acknowledged son Vernon, born prior to Metcalf's death in 1869. Metcalf willed land to Easter Calloway.
