- "Westfield of the Massachusett Bay Colony’s first record of enslaved people reveals that (SH) Captain Joseph Moseley owned a number of slaves, among whom were (EP) Ishmael and (EP) Joanna. The couple had at least three children who remained slaves of Captain Moseley: (EP) Peter, born December 11, 1714; (EP) Gersham, born December 9, 1716; and (EP) Lidia, born April 28, 1720. The entire family was sold to (SH) Edward Burleson of Suffield by Moseley’s executors shortly after 1720. Thirteen years later, (EP) Ishmael and (EP) Joanna succeeded in purchasing their freedom from Burleson on May 28, 1733 for the sum of 100 pounds. The manumission document states that, “We (EP) Peter, or (EP) Ishmael Negro and (EP) Joanna Negro, who are husband and wife, of the town of Suffield in the County of Hampshire . . . are free and [have] full power to act and do any manner preferred.” Source: Slavery in Westfield: The Documentary Record, 1713-1790, by Joseph Carvalho III
